Good Neighbor Pharmacy, Elevate, and AmerisourceBergen Collaborate with the American Disease Prevention Coalition to Advocate for Expanded Pharmacist Vaccine Authority in 10 States

Oct 19, 2021

Throughout the 2021 legislative sessions, AmerisourceBergen State Government Affairs worked with the American Disease Prevention Coalition (ADPC) to advocate for legislation to remove barriers to pharmacist vaccine administration. In early 2020, Good Neighbor Pharmacy and AmerisourceBergen joined the ADPC—establishing AmerisourceBergen as the first pharmaceutical wholesaler member.

ADPC is a coalition of pharmacy associations, patient advocacy groups, drug manufacturers, pharmaceutical wholesalers, and pharmacies that advocate for increased access to vaccines in order to stop the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases. In doing so, ADPC supports the introduction and passage of model legislation that allows pharmacists to independently administer all U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended vaccines—including all approved, COVID-19 vaccines.

Collaborating with ADPC-member organizations and other external stakeholders, Good Neighbor Pharmacy and AmerisourceBergen State Government Affairs supported the introduction and passage of bills in 10 states (AR, CA, FL, GA, IL, NY, OH, OK, VA, & WI). These recently enacted laws represent significant progress in allowing  pharmacists to practice at the top of their license—enabling independent and community pharmacists to continue to provide high quality patient care, especially in rural and underserved communities. In addition, ADPC and member companies are working to support pending legislation in Pennsylvania that would permanently expand pharmacist scope of practice in the state.

Despite marked success in 2021, there is more work to be done. Thank you to all of our Good Neighbor Pharmacy and Elevate customers who contributed to this year’s success by responding to grassroots Calls to Action. AmerisourceBergen State Government Affairs and Good Neighbor Pharmacy look forward to continuing this critical work, and collaborating with ADPC and our independent and community pharmacy customers in 2022.
